National FaMEALy Day

Under the Presidential Proclamation 1895 issued last September 30, 2009, the Filipino Family Day will be commemorated every 4th Monday of September. This year's National FaMEALy Day is today, September 26, 2011. Cancel all your appointments and eat dinner with the family!

It is every Filipino family tradition to eat dinner together. This is the time when family members sit around the same table, eat the same food and listen to one another. Unfortunately, this family ritual is  fading away because of all kinds of social, economic, and technological factors such as both parents working, longer commutes, and the children shuttling between school and after-school activities  e.g. sports or choir practices, attached to their TV or gadgets at home or hanged outside with peers. Family members are left to eat at their own time, with no routine, with no rules. Parents should realize that spending time with their children during mealtimes is vital to their family's well-being. It will not only improve communication among family members but it can also help overseeing their children's growth.

The first National FaMEALy Day - Araw ng Pagkilala na Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga was launched by a popular noodle brand, Lucky Me in 2008 FaMEALy Day. It became a nationwide call to celebrate family dining every 4th Monday of September as supported through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed between the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the National Committee for Filipino Families (NCFF). National FaMEALy Day is also celebrated along with the first day of DSWD's National Family Week.

Indeed, family is the basic unit of the society. How will the society be fully developed if we would not start it in our homes?
