Korean Film Festival at SM Cebu

In celebration with the Korean Tourism Month, Korean Embassy and Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines collaborated with SM Cinemas to showcase the popular Korean films for the 2011 Korean Film Festival this September 28 to October 2, 2011 at SM Cebu City. For all the Korean fanatics and movie addicts, mark your calendars and box out your way to Cinema One.



This year's theme  is “7 Different Colors of Love”, will feature seven films which stars some of South Korea's sought after celebrities such as singer-actor Jang Geun Suk, Cha Tae Hyun and Song Hye Kyo. Last year, the Korean Film Festival screened horror movies. All the screenings are FREE to the public. Seats are available in first come, first serve basis.





The seven films that will be shown in the 2011 Korean Film Festival in the Philippines are:






Hwang Qu-duk’s For Eternal Hearts, 103 minutes
Schedule: Sept. 28/Wed – 530PM; Sept. 30/Fri – 530PM; Oct. 2/Sat – 930PM
Synopsis: College professor Su-young recounts to his class the tale of his first love. As a student in the 1980s, he meets a wild and eccentric girl who he names “Pippi”, and is crushed when she later jumps to her death from a window. But soon after she magically reappears, and his life becomes increasingly surreal and bizarre.
For Eternal Hearts premiered as the opening film of the 11th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival in 2007. The film was later invited to the “Winds of Asia” category of the Tokyo International Film Festival also in the same year.















Lee Jun-ik’s The Happy Life, 112 minutes
Schedule: Sept. 28/Wed – 930PM; Oct. 1/Sat – 530PM
Synopsis: The untimely passing of the lead vocalist/frontman of a college rockband sets up a reunion for the other members of the group. Former bass player Seong-wook lives a hand-to-mouth existence working two jobs. Drummer Hyeok-su is a single father struggling to make a living as a car salesman. The jobless lead guitarist Gi-yeong dreams of taking over the rockband Volcano as the new frontman.
When he suggests they reform the band while the old friends reminisce at the funeral, they all spurn the idea. But Gi-yeong persists and gets each to relent, setting the stage for a rock and roll reunion.















Chang Yoon-hyun’s Hwang Jin Yi, 141 minutes
Schedule: Sept. 29/Thur – 530 PM; Oct. 2/Sun – 730 PM
Synopsis: The story follows Hwang Jin Yi, a courtesan who lived in 16th century Korea. Hwang Jin-Yi was a beautiful, talented and intelligent young woman who was able to read and write well, but because she was an illegitimate child, she had no other recourse but to become a courtesan where she used her position to gain favor with the noble classes.














Hur Jin-ho’s Christmas in August, 97 minutes
Schedule: Sept. 29/Thur – 730 PM; Oct. 2/Sun – 530 PM
Synopsis: A portrait photographer, Jung-won develops a romance with a parking agent, Da-rim. However, the romance never gets a chance to develop into intimacy. Jung-won soon finds out he is suffering from an unnamed illness and has to come to terms with his impending death.
He sets out to continue living as usual, going out with his friends and spending time with his family in the small town he has lived for decades.
















Jang Hun’s Secret Reunion, 116 minutes
Schedule: Sept. 29/Thur – 930 PM; Oct. 1/Sat – 730 PM
Synopsis: The movie follows National Intelligence Service (NIS) Agent Lee Han-gyu who falls from grace after failing to stop the assassination of a North Korean dissident.
The sleeper cell responsible for the assassination includes relative newcomer Ji-won who gets marked as a traitor when the mission goes south. Six years later both men are working different jobs when they bump into each other and quickly form a bond.











Lee Yoon-ki’s My Dear Enemy, 123 minutes
Schedule: Sept 30./Fri – 730 PM; Oct 1./Sat – 930PM
Synopsis: Jobless and single in her thirties, Hee-soo is miserable. On one fine day, she sets out to find Byoung-woon, her ex-boyfriend. It is not love that brings them together but $1,000 Hee-soo had lent to Byoung-woon a year ago.
Synopsis: Byoung-woon is also penniless but surprisingly happy for he knows the girls who are willing to give him money. Afraid Byoung-woon may run off before clearing his debt, Hee-soo follows him as he visits many girls to borrow money, so the two ex-love birds set out on a one day journey to collect money, and memories.
















Kang Hyeong-chol’s Scandalmakers/Speedy Scandal, 108 minutes
Schedule: Sept. 30/Fri – 930PM
Synopsis: Former teen idol Nam Hyeon-soo is now in his thirties and working as a radio DJ. A young woman named Hwang Jeong-nam sent stories about her being a single mother to the radio station Hyeon-soo worked at, telling him she is going to meet her father.
He finds out that he is the father of Jeong-Nam and also finding out that Jeong-Nam was his first love’s name and the other Jeong-Nam’s real name is Jae-In. Jae-In and her son, Ki-Dong. Not believing it, he goes through a DNA blood test,and the results say that they’re related. Later on he tries not to create a scandal with what’s happening to Jae-In, Ki Dong, and himself. He also starts to love them like his children and cares for them.
